With his raking good looks and tall build, Rob was born for sweeping women off their feet. As a senior member of the champion Parises Squares team, he was always quite popular and well built from the sport. An old knee injury stemming from those games occasionally bothers him. He tends to be clean shaven, though it is not unusual to see a few days’ worth of stubble about his face.

Sister  -  Rachel Atherton
Daughter  -  Dakin Rose Atherton

History:

Born in London on Earth, Rob is the oldest child of Molly and Jack Atherton. His younger sister Rachel was born eight years later. Both his parents were members of Starfleet – Molly was a Commander, in charge of day to day operations at the teleportation research facility located just outside London, and Jack was a pilot, making frequent shuttle runs around the Sol system. Jack Atherton refused a number of promotions and transfers to stay near Earth with his family.

When Rob was of age, applying to the Academy seemed the only logical choice. Though his grades in school were not always the best, a number of recommendations from his professors made the difference in his application, and he was accepted into the Academy.

Rob did all right in his classes, but where he truly excelled was in the social aspects of the Academy. Rob balanced it all with a confident air, not allowing anything or anyone to get him down. He was very popular and knew how to make connections, always having a friendly word for everyone and an amazing memory for faces, especially those of women. His outgoing personality and student work also earned him the title of Class President more than once during his years at the Academy, and he was also on the Parises Squares team his junior and senior year. When the Dominion war broke out, Rob had just graduated from the Academy, and jumped into active duty.

The next few years were defining ones for Rob – he learned more about himself then than he had in the earlier twenty-two. Losses were heavy among the crews he served with, and as a quick thinker, Rob found himself jumping ranks and positions faster than he thought possible. He also fell deeply in love with a fellow officer, Miranda Bell, who he eventually proposed to, but before they could be wed, she was killed in a battle with the Breen. Rob was devastated by this loss, and could not bear to get close to anyone for quite some time afterward. The subsequent demise of both his parents during the war also struck him hard, as they had both been called to active duty as well.

After gaining custody of his younger sister Rachel, Rob served on a variety of ships and stations, liking the constant movement from place to place and the different people he met all over. Rachel, however, in contrast to her brother’s easy ability to make friends, had a much more difficult time, and tended to withdraw into herself. Rob tried to encourage her, but it was difficult for him to understand her feelings due to his own outgoing personality. He also fell into a heavy depression over all those he had lost in the war, becoming a heavy drinker, something that almost lost him his position in the fleet. However, a kind-hearted officer took him under her wing, sponsoring him for Starfleet Command School provided he clean up his act. It took some doing, but Rob eventually went on to Command School, excelling once in classes again and straightening out.

Once out of Command School, Rob took a number of positions as 2XO and XO, continuing to jump from assignment to assignment within the fleet, but gaining experience with all sorts of situations and people.

Personality:

Rob is handsome and knows it – he enjoys charming women of all species with his casual grin and English accent. Though on the surface he seems calm, there is a chaotic current that runs through him that often keeps him on the move. He makes friends extremely easily, though he really has no true friends that he confides in. He tends not to talk about himself, preferring instead to turn the conversation over to others. The loss of many loved ones during the Dominion war has hardened him to pure love, and he prefers not be hurt in that manner again, sticking to casual romance instead of working on relationships.

Though very bright, Rob has a problem with technobabble, preferring simple explanations to more lengthy and complicated ones. He tends to trust the details to the officers who serve under him, once they have proved their worth. He does step up and plays hardball when needed, though he prefers a very casual and open working environment.

Part of the XO's job is to foster community aboard the sim, but Maree does this above and beyond the standard I'd expect. She has helped more players than I can count to get involved with our party through her joint posting with them and is great at developing ideas that improve community. A short way to sum it up is to say that she does what she's supposed to do, all the extra I ask, and then some. Well done!
William Riker XO of the Year Award William Riker XO of the Year Award - Awarded January 23, 2010 (for 2009) by Obsidian Fleet Council:
Well well well, what can I say about Maree? I guess being honest is the best way. :) So here goes for my nomination for her as Obsidian Fleet’s Executive Officer of the Year.

Maree and I have known each other for a long time – pretty much since the start of my simming career back in 2003. She was the COO of the first ship I was on, a lovely Sovereign class called the Poseidon. That first fleet she was in recognized her talents as a player and a member of the community, as well as her admin skills, by giving her an executive officer position on their first space station sim. In that fleet, it wasn’t possible to apply for a high-ranking position – it was something you earned through a lot of hard work, and it was a testament to her skills and personality that she was selected to fill the role.

For a long time she worked tirelessly to support the sim, effectively filling the CO’s shoes on many occasions as real life carried the CO away from the sim. She posted with many, struck up friendships, was not afraid to work on some of the more unusual ideas (including mine – anyone who sims with me knows how strange my characters can be at times), and helped those of us who were less experienced (read: me again) to grow. She was XO of that station for four years, until the fleet’s closure.

She joined Obsidian Fleet whilst doing all of this, as chief of communications, then chief of operations, of Starbase Sixty under Captain A’koja Dea (our esteemed former Triadite Admiral Madison Indri). Earning herself two rank promotions to Lieutenant Commander, she again proved her worth to the community, writing with pretty much everyone and with an absolutely unique character that I can guarantee won’t be replicated anywhere – she has a unique and classy writing style and a tasteful and developed character development skill.

In her insanity, she later agreed to serve as the second-in-command of this Triadite’s simulation, Obsidian Command. Having been warned of the insanity of her decision, she agreed to take on the responsibility nevertheless and it’s on OC that I feel she has, once again, set a standard that is unmatched anywhere.

In terms of writing, Maree is one of the best I have ever seen. Grammatically she is flawless. But what’s more important is her style. If one reads her writing, they’ll be scrolling through a rich tapestry of descriptive delicacy, scenes painted with enormous clarity whilst still leaving that necessary bit to the imagination, allowing the reader to see clearly what she is visualising for us all. In terms of plot, she can weave twists into the plot that allow for the inclusion of a far wider range of active characters and NPCs, creating more fun for every member of the crew and increasing the overall quality and range of the sim. Finally, she frequently allows and invites others to JP with her and helps them to develop their characters through interactions with hers. Quantity is also good – she usually makes double figures, and last month wrote 21 posts, well clear of her nearest rival.

Administratively she also is one of the best XOs money (or advertisements) can buy. She has served as acting CO of the sim on numerous occasions but most notably for over a month while I was working at a summer school, with little support from me, and she was more than effective in her guidance of the game. She worked hard on repairing our second OC website and on transition to the third, fixing broken image links and moving content. She has worked with me on the development of new site ideas and the implementation of some of our best OOC site features, such as out-of-character biographies. She has also made suggestions to improve the site further.

As many of you know, I have weak eyes, which require me to spend less time on the computer than some. My time is further shared between Triad responsibilities and my second character. Maree is the perfect XO to support a CO like me – she helps to guide the plot effectively in general, she ran an entire subplot in our last mission that, without her, would have been impossible to do and made use of some of the supporting features of the station, and she helps me with the regular administrative duties of the sim, such as the newsletter we produce monthly, with keeping track of post counts, and with sending out notices and offers of assistance to members of our crew. She gets back to me within 24 hours on all OC apps and she is quick to respond to anything else I may send her way.

Something of key importance – Maree won’t blindly agree with me if she is not of the same opinion. She will confidently and reasonably state her view if she feels strongly about something, yet isn’t insubordinate in doing so. An XO that will be confident in their own views is a key asset, because it provides the bouncing-off facility that every CO needs as well as improves the sim further or helps to prevent questionable judgment calls from the CO. She is also willing to politely debate matters with the crew, whilst still being able to put her foot down comfortably on matters when it is necessary.

You know what else? She’s a friend. We’ve met in real-life several times despite the six thousand miles that separate us geographically, so we’re friends outside of OF anyway, but online she gives me the support that someone in a CO’s role and an Admiralty position can need from time to time. (Ask anyone who’s on the Admiralty – none of these jobs are as glamourous as they are rumoured, despite the Triadic chocolate vault - which, for the record, doesn't exist - or the new seats in the JAG office!) I might have quit simming had it not been for her constant cushion of support. And friendship is the absolute embodiment of what we’re here for (aside from writing, JPing, and maintaining the spirit of Star Trek that the Great Bird of the Galaxy brought to us) – this being the case, in combination with all of the above, she is, pretty much, the perfect XO.

So, in my view, the William Riker XO of the Year Award is something of which she is more than deserving. I hope that this Council will do her the honour of granting her this privilege, and either way, thanks for your consideration of this most worthy player.

xomerit TF XO Quarterly Unit of Merit Award x2 - Awarded January 13, 2010 by Admirals Mox, Day and Havok
I am nominating Cdr. Atherton for the XO quarterly award for a second time in 2009 because I believe she is as worthy of this accolade now as she was when she received it previously, if not more so. Maree continues to be a highly supportive Executive Officer in all regards. She writes excellent quality posts that include many members of the crew, thus building the community that is the main goal of Obsidian Command - indeed, in November she topped the charts with a massive 21-post spree, and regularly she reaches double figures in personal post count. She helps me to understand some of the complicated twists and works with me to develop stories for Obsidian Command. She is a competent and experienced simmer who is able to support other members of the crew and offer them the benefit of her extensive experience. Oftentimes, she spends a lot of her free time working to keep the storyline rolling. Whilst she'll kick me for saying this (relatively) publicly, she'll make a fantastic commanding officer one day, since she is capable in all aspects of command. She has offered a great deal of help in making Obsidian Command a success this year, her personal efforts having changed the entire landscape of the game. - nominated by Captain Jocelyn Sterling, Commanding Officer, Obsidian Command

Very few people do description as well as Maree does. Her linguistic choices are always excellent, and this was particularly highlighted for me in a couple of JPs we're doing at the moment. I wish I had half the writing talent she does! Still, someone has to maintain the good rep of the sim ;)

For continuing to work hard despite being in what is the most difficult year of university! I want her to know that her efforts are appreciated - I ask a lot of Maree as an XO, and she undoubtedly has to put up with a lot with me being her CO, so this is a small token of that appreciation.

For unwavering personal support in running the sim. She works hard in many ways, but it is probably for Maree's support that I am still operating Obsidian Command and haven't resigned by now. She makes being a CO a lot more tolerable, despite the stresses it brings, and I want that to be recognised.
ribbonofcommittment Ribbon of Commitment - Awarded August 20, 2009 by Captain Jocelyn Sterling
For taking on the responsibility of running Obsidian Command for well over a month with little to no support. Maree worked hard to keep things running and to handle all of the administrative issues that came up, keeping in contact with me and dealing with individual issues too. Given that she was relatively new to her job (within the context of Obsidian Command), this is even more worthy of note, and it is thusly that I nominate her for the Ribbon of Commitment.

Maree has worked hard since she joined Obsidian Command in early May. She’s helped me to create or advance a number of projects that wouldn’t have been easily possible without her assistance – for one, she has made a pile of updates to the website which means that, for once, we have a complete set of biographies on the site, save for those I haven’t sent her yet. She also created almost all of the crew awards page listings, some of the pages in the Starbase Guide section of our website, and has supported me out-of-character as well. Additionally, she has contributed to the sense of community in a bold way, stepping forward and joint-posting with a good number of members of the crew. Community is all-important in today’s simming world situation – there aren’t so many people still playing, and even less interaction between sims, so it’s good to maintain what we can within our little corner of Obsidian Fleet. Maree’s helped to develop this through communication and working with others. She’s been a member of the sim for a short time so far, but I feel that she’s worthy of this award anyway.

Maree has only been on the sim for a couple of weeks, and she has already thrown herself into things. Indeed, I've mentioned this on previous awards, so what's the reason for this citation? Her out-of-character contributions have been excellent. The work she's doing is great and has allowed us to make much more of the sim - website improvements, the newsletter, the return of the POM award, the upcoming wiki, and any number of other things are all attributable to her hard work and effort. The sim will benefit greatly for her contributions. I am so grateful and this award signifies that gratitude. Congratulations!

"Rob took a step closer to examine the image, finding that if he looked hard enough, he could see a ghostly image of Sterling through the projector." Classic! Fantastic stuff from the Commander, whose talent for writing never ceases to amaze me. :)
newcomer Newcomer of the Month Award - Awarded May 19, 2009 by Captain Jocelyn Sterling
Maree has been with us before and has proven her excellence in role-playing, but she has already contributed a number of superb single and joint posts to the sim and has jumped into her XO duties with aplomb. It's therefore fitting that she be recognised for her efforts, especially at a time when I shouldn't be distracting her from her studies with RPing! ;) Congratulations!
